Understanding your Cat’s Food Allergy
Food allergies can be frustrating but the good news is that truly hypoallergenic diets are available to help diagnose and manage this condition.
What is Food Allergy?
A food allergy is an over-reaction of the immune system against proteins in the food that would normally be considered harmless. This may be caused by abnormalities in the intestinal tract allowing the immune system to be exposed to proteins that are normally not absorbed across the intestine. In contrast, food intolerance does not involve the immune system – an example is lactose intolerance in cats (they can lack the enzyme to digest lactose, the sugar in milk). Although the mechanisms are different, food allergy and intolerance can be difficult to tell apart and their dietary management is very similar.
The most common signs of food allergy are either an itchy skin or gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting or diarrhoea (or both). Many other conditions can cause these signs so your vet may need to carry out various investigations to rule out other conditions.
Diet is Important.
The reliable way to diagnose a food allergy is to feed an elimination diet such as Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets Feline HA St/Ox Hypoallergenic. If your cat has a food allergy then the signs should disappear when fed the elimination diet (and return when your cat goes back onto its original food).
Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets Feline HA St/Ox Hypoallergenic is a truly hypoallergenic diet – it contains selected proteins that have been treated (hydrolysed) to break them down into tiny fragments that are highly unlikely to provoke an immune response.
Once food allergy is confirmed you may chose to either find a diet which avoids the specific protein source that your cat is allergic to (if this has been identified) or continue feeding a hydrolysed diet such as Feline HA St/Ox Hypoallergenic.

Hypoallergenic food for cat
My cat was quite ill and being sick alot. Took to vets and told he was allergenic to chicken and other poultry. Since he as been eating this food. He has put on weight and he is doing really well. He took about two weeks to transfer over to this food. High in protein. You have to have plenty of water available for the cats when feeding them this food. Highly recommended.

Amazing and Great value for money.
This has definitely been one of the better dry foods I have ever seen. I have been bring up cats for 30 years going on and my little one just had 3 kittens and I have never in my life seen such good results. If I had to pick one other it would be royal canin kitten but tried this on the advice of my vet and my cats don’t even eat there wet food now and had them on iams and hills. People say its not good for there kidneys as they get older to have them on a dry diet but that hasn’t actually been proven and its more down to dehydration over a long period of time. every vet will tell u something different. Some vets recommend a dry diet were as some encourage both as some cats struggle to take in the rite amounts of water so that’s the only reason there kidneys can be troubled if they are dehydrated over a long period of time. Again if u read up on it properly there is no proven fact that dry food on its own causes liver failure so people that put that comment up have probably been told by there vet and not looked in to it more. if u ask a different vet they tell u something else. I tend to listen to my vets they pretty much go through everything with u in detail but a dry food diet is perfectly fine as long as u have enough water for your little one. Not so much have the water out but u need to make sure they are taking the correct amount in and u don’t want them over drinking either so that’s why it is a bit tricky but if u do it correct it’s actually more beneficial. Also just a quick heads up on the wheat subject, Its all nonsense cats have been living outdoors before we started having them as pets and they can only have issues with wheat if they have allergies but apart from that it can actually be very beneficial for your little one so 2 very important things that people always tell u to stay away from when in reality there is a bit of truth behind but for the most part wheat and dry food for your little one is perfectly fine. Just make sure u have a complete dry food as some of the dry foods out there are don’t have the required nutrients that a cat will need for there day to day life. Not saying I’m an expert by any means but I’ve done a lot of research on the advice of my vet and everything he tells me is pretty much spot on. If in doubt just speak to your vet and don’t listen to comments.

Great product, but comes with a caveat!
I initially thought my cat had a flea allergy but after spending hundreds of pounds on decontaminating the house and repeated visits to our useless vet, she was still itching her fur out in chunks and had also started to vomit. In desperation we decided to see if she had developed an intolerance to her food, so we gave this a shot – within a very short period of time her dermatitis stared to subside and her stomach settled, and eventually her fur grew back in absolutely beautiful condition. The kibbles are designed to be easily digested so they are small and light, and they actually smell quite appetising so you won’t have to worry about your house smelling like a pet shop! We couldn’t be happier and it seems that our cats are pretty happy with it as well, judging by how they jostle each other at feeding time and guzzle their meals down. Now for the caveat: our cats now refuse to eat anything else!

My cats love this!
I know it might seem bland to give a cat the same thing every day but Daisy doesn’t seem to mind and reminds me twice daily that it is food time! Daisy has a delicate stomach and these biscuits are great for her. The vet said they are one of the best when I told him what I am feeding her now. Maybe these are more expensive than supermarket cat biscuits, but thee do seem better quality and as you buy bulk, I’m not sure it works out as much more!! I will continue to buy these, as they seem to be good for her!

Well fixed my cat
I was recommended this food by my vet after my cat had regular bouts of diarrhoea and nearly daily vomiting episodes. They suggested I try it as first instance before doing tests. She’s been on it a month and we haven’t had one vomiting episode! It’s great. It does look like rice krispies and the portions are quite generous, which benefits us as my cat actually seems content between meals. I only wish they did a wet version of it.

Brilliant for my kitten with skin problems!!
I have been using this for nearly 2 months now for my 5 month old kitten. He suffered awful scratching and he would cut his skin open every day to the point we had to keep a cone on him 24/7 for about 10 weeks. The vet did biopsies and we couldnt work out what was causing it. She suggested this food and since he’s been on it his cone could come off and his skin has cleared up! At one point his skin looked like elephant skin with hard roles of it. He looks so much healthier and happier now. He eats a lot of it so must really like it. He must be allergic to other cat food. My older cat who is 4 has to have it too to prevent other brands of food being eaten by the kitten and the 3.5kg bag lasts about 3 weeks. Really pleased it worked for him. Just wish I could buy 10-15kg bags.

Leaves my cat content and fluffy
Merlin loves these cat biscuits, they’re smaller than usual cat biscuits and lighter in colour but my cat Merlin is totally content eating them, he loves them and looks forward to meal time.Merlin has had issues in the past with itchiness and baldness, i genuinely believe it was because i was giving him corner shop type bought food, ever since giving him a quality diet like these pro-plan biscuits his fur has grown back on his rump, tummy and back of his legs and is looking better than ever. Not just that but he’s way more content and him being happy makes me happy. I have found paying more for quality food not just makes my cat happier and me but is an investment in better, good health.

Does the job
Budget friendly hypoallergenic food. If you spend more on say science plan yes it’d probably work better but it also costs an arm and a leg. You get what you pay for. My cat still needs small dose of steroids to stop his skin reaction but it’s alot better than on regular food.

It cured my cat!
My ginger neutered tom had a swollen lip from eating cheap cat biscuits. After a lot of Googling, I bought this hypoallergenic dry cat food and within a month, his lip had gone down and now he is fine and what’s more, he loves these biscuits! Saved me an expensive trip to the vet, too.

Expensive but tasty (apparently!)
My cat developed scabs on her belly so I bought this to see if it would help. Whilst it’s too early to tell if it’s helped yet, I thought I’d leave a review saying that my cat wolfed it down immediately. As did 3 of the neighbourhood cats – including one that’s a very fussy eater! Pretty good recommendation I reckon!!

Pro Plan Hypo Allergenic Cat Food
My cat was prescribed this diet by her vet when she suffered from itchy scabs all down her spine from head to tail. The vet wasn’t sure if it was an extreme reaction to flea saliva or a food allergy, so we tried this food initially for 6 weeks . The food has a single source of protein in an easy to absorb form.Luckily the cat really likes the food so there was no trouble getting her to eat it ! It comes as small round kibbles and looks a bit like Rice Crispies only a little bigger. They must have a good flavour as Emerald eats them willingly and they are light and easy to handle.I have now been told that it is OK to include other foods in her diet but will continue with this one as she likes it so much.It is easy to order through Amazon and have the bag delivered to the door.

Great for cat with food allergies and value for money
I have just changed my rescue cat from normal RCannin dry food ( which his foster carer was feeding him) to this product- just 6 days ago. This was because he was itching his head , being sick nearly every day, had soft stools intermittently and dry skin. Also was a constantly grooming so his belly is bald and was quite lethargic at times- he is an indoor only cat so needs to have the energy ran around!Since he has had this food he has NOT been sick once , the itching had stopped. He has more energy. His stools were a bit soft at first but by the 6th day of having this food they are solid again!I am not constantly cleaning up his sick pools and his constant belly grooming and biting himself have virtually stopped. The poor cat had a food allergy and thank God for the internet which has helped me to diagnose this food issue without having to pay expensive vet bills- it is early days but so far so good!.I will keep him on this food only without any treats for another 3 months and if all is still OK then this is his diet for life I am afraid! This food is also fine for long term feeding since it has all of the nutrients a cat requires- and he loves the taste- thank goodness.

Done the job!
Our cat was diagnosed last year with a flea and/or tick allergy. He was developing crusty sores on his skin, losing patches of fur and over-grooming his tummy. After the vet initially gave us stronger spot-on treatment it appeared to mostly clear up but then it came back this year alongside occasional upset stomach. To avoid further testing we put him on this food exclusively for 4-6 weeks and it seems to have cleared it up almost completely. We will keep feeding for a while longer and if everything looks good then this is the food for him. He’s certainly needed more water since being on dry food only so make sure the water bowl is topped up regularly, and/or mix water into the dry kibble, but needless to say we’re very happy. Now just got to see how subscribe and save works out as I’ve read mixed reviews re pricing and reliability…P.S. he was a little overweight before having this food but due to the ease of portion control is looking much healthier and slimmer!
